There Is No Fate

You often see a lot of inspirational quotes on social media, Instagram bis probably the worst for it, and yet Instagram is often named as the most toxic social network for mental health.

So are inspirational quotes really inspiring or just the opposite?

Let me tell you a secret. A happy person, a confident person doesn’t need to stand in front of a mirror on a morning telling themselves how happy and confident they are.

Those little false boosts to your mood don’t fix any problems you have, they just sweep them under the carpet for a while.

Why should we listen to you, you’re never happy?

Yeah well I like sad, it’s happy for deep people.

Charles Bukowski’s grave has the words “Don’t try” on it. Just let things happen, making an effort and failing is, well, a failure and can bring you down. Just let it happen, what comes will come, don’t try and everything that follows is a bonus.

Y

ou don’t try. That’s very important: not to try, either for Cadillacs, creation or immortality. You wait, and if nothing happens, you wait some more. It’s like a bug high on the wall. You wait for it to come to you. When it gets close enough you reach out, slap out and kill it. Or if you like its looks, you make a pet out of it.”
– Charles Bukowski

Worse than inspirational quotes are what I term as anti inspirational. Things like “Cut out the people in your life that bring you down”.

Now sure you could argue that you are dealing with a problem there by getting it out of your life. You’re not tho are you, you are just pushing it under a bigger carpet.

If you have a problem in your life, and if I claim to care about you then I will move heaven and earth to help you. I won’t turn my back and walk away.

These types of anti inspirational quotes that encourage people to abandon their friends if things get tough are just fueling the rise in selfishness.

Maybe you don’t feel special today, but you are, shall I tell you how special you are?

There were millions of sperm that could have won that race to the egg, but they didn’t, you did. That gift of life that you have that those millions of others didn’t get makes you very lucky, because be honest, do you remember trying to win that race or did it just happen?

So don’t look in the mirror on a morning and tell yourself how happy you are or how successful you are going to be. Look and remember how lucky you are to have lived, and how every moment is a bonus.

Don’t try.
