What did they used to be?

In 1984, the most common computer programming languages were:

  1. BASIC
  2. COBOL
  3. FORTRAN
  4. C
  5. Pascal

So I picked 1984 because this was kind of a heyday time for what in the UK we call bedroom coders, lead by the pinnacle of computing, the ZX Spectrum. It was also probably that year that I wrote my first program.

These were widely used for various applications such as scientific simulations, business applications, and computer games.

At that time, personal computers were gaining popularity and BASIC was commonly used as the introductory language for hobbyists and beginners.

Meanwhile, COBOL and FORTRAN were primarily used for business and scientific applications, and C and Pascal were used for developing operating systems and other system software.
